Tour Description
Our adventure commences with the pick-up from your hotel or chosen accommodation at 02:00 PM (private service can start at 09:00 AM). Once aboard the transport, we will make our way to the outskirts of Santa Marta, traversing the main avenues while providing you with an introduction to the city's founding.
Our initial stop will be at La Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino, a historically significant estate constructed in the 17th century. This site holds immense importance as it was where Colombia's national hero, Simón Bolívar, passed away in 1830.
The estate has been transformed into a museum, showcasing a diverse array of historical objects and artifacts related to Bolívar's life and death. Here, we will embark on a guided tour of the main house and its gardens, delving into the history of the region and Colombia as a whole.
Our journey will continue towards the city center, seeking out the architectural gem, The Cathedral Basilica Menor de Santa Marta, an awe-inspiring religious edifice that remains a sacred site for many worshippers.
The cathedral boasts an impressive façade, featuring an entrance adorned with stone-carved columns and arches. Inside the church, you'll find the remains of the city's founder, Rodrigo de Bastidas, alongside an extensive collection of religious art, including altarpieces and sculptures from the 18th and 19th centuries.
We will delve deeper into the city center to explore the Gold Museum of Santa Marta, an essential stop to understand the indigenous heritage and the abundant wealth of this fertile land.
The museum displays an extensive collection of gold artifacts, dating back to pre-Columbian times, crafted by the indigenous cultures of the Colombian Caribbean region. Among the museum's standout pieces are masks, bracelets, earrings, necklaces, and other items that showcase the skill and artistry of indigenous craftsmen. We will also have the opportunity to freely explore the building, experiencing the colonial era ambiance with its spacious interior courtyards, high ceilings, and street-facing balconies.
The tour proceeds along the main city avenues, pausing at the monument to “Pibe Valderrama”, where you'll have free time for photos.
The Monument to "Pibe" Valderrama is a bronze statue honoring Colombian soccer legend Carlos "El Pibe" Valderrama, inaugurated in 2010. It captures "El Pibe" with his distinctive blonde hair and Colombian National Team uniform.
To conclude this enriching city tour, we will stop at the Taganga viewpoint, offering panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea, the port of Taganga, and the surrounding areas, including the mountains of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. The viewpoint is particularly breathtaking at sunset, with the sky and sea's colors creating a spectacular vista.
After enjoying these magical views, we will return to your accommodation following a 4-hour tour.
