Populating Boyacá

We meet at 9 AM at the designated pick-up location in Villa de Leyva, prepared to embark on our Boyacá exploration. We will depart early to maximize our day and experience the finest towns in the region:

* Paipa >> Our journey begins in Paipa, situated just 14 kilometers from Tunja. Renowned for its hot springs and Sochagota Lake, Paipa is steeped in history, having played a pivotal role in Colombia's independence. During the 1819 Battle of Vargas Swamp, Colombian forces led by Simón Bolívar achieved a significant victory against royalist troops, marking a crucial milestone in the quest for freedom. We will delve into this historic event as we explore the area and take in the lake's scenic views.

* Vargas Swamp >> Our adventure continues at Vargas Swamp, another key site in Colombia's national history. Amidst breathtaking landscapes, this was the battleground that solidified Colombia's independence. We will pause to reflect on these events and the site's historical significance.

* Iza >> After soaking in the history of Paipa and Vargas Swamp, we proceed to Iza, a charming colonial town famous for its cobblestone streets and traditional architecture. We'll stroll through its quaint streets and uncover the cultural richness of its residents, celebrated for their hospitality and delectable local desserts. Iza offers a serene atmosphere that invites us to immerse ourselves in Boyacá's authenticity.

* Cuitiva >> Our journey then takes us to Cuitiva, renowned for its lagoon, a sacred site for the local community. At an elevation of 3,000 meters above sea level, Cuitiva provides panoramic views of the moor and an opportunity to learn about the cultural and ecological importance of these highlands. Here, we will experience the tranquility and spiritual connection that emanates from this stunning natural environment.

* Lake Tota >> We will arrive at Lake Tota, Colombia's largest lake and one of the highest in South America, situated at 3,015 meters above sea level. This breathtaking body of water offers not only unparalleled scenic beauty but is also a popular spot for water activities such as boating and fishing.

* Playa Blanca >> On the shores of Lake Tota, we will stop at Playa Blanca, a natural paradise with clear waters and white sands. It's the perfect setting to relax, swim, and enjoy the tranquility of the natural surroundings. Here, we can partake in optional water activities and admire the panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains.

* Nobsa >> Post our time at Lake Tota, we head to Nobsa, known as the town of weaving. We will explore traditional weaving workshops and learn about Boyacá's rich textile heritage. Visitors can purchase local products and observe artisans crafting beautiful items, integral to the regional culture and economy for centuries.

* Pueblito Boyacense >> Our final destination is Pueblito Boyacense, a delightful replica of Boyacá's most picturesque towns. Established in 1992, this small district recreates the colonial architecture and ambiance of the region's traditional towns. We can wander its cobblestone streets, admire the typical houses, and enjoy local crafts.

After a day filled with history, culture, and breathtaking landscapes, we return to Villa de Leyva, where our tour concludes.
