Tour Description
Our adventure kicks off in Villa de Leyva, where an expert guide will meet you at your accommodation within the town. Please note that the activity can begin anytime between 9 AM and 02:00 PM; we highly recommend an early morning start to fully enjoy your visits.
We will depart Villa de Leyva, heading northwest towards the municipality of Gachantivá. Our journey will take us along traditional rural routes. Boyacá, located in central Colombia, boasts a stunning and varied landscape, from fertile valleys to highlands and mountains with a climate range from cold to warm.
After about 40 minutes, we will reach our first stop: the Molino de La Primavera Museum. This colonial gem stands amidst the green plains of the Cane River. Inside, you will find remnants of the rodezno machinery, once used by ancient farmers for the grinding of wheat and corn.
With roots dating back to 1630, this mill was the epicenter of flour production for over three centuries. Its name, Primavera, reflects the fine quality of the flour it produced.
We will explore the entire house, learning from our expert guide about the ancient flour production process, the tools, ancestral artifacts, and the significant role this region played as the granary of the Old Colombia, known as New Granada.
Following our museum tour, we will savor a delightful traditional snack, such as authentic arepas made with flour crafted by local hands, paired with a delicious hot coffee.
From Gachantivá, we'll proceed to Sutamarchan, a 30-minute drive away. Here, our second destination awaits: the Olivanto Orchard. This orchard is notable for hosting the olive trees closest to the equator and at the world's highest altitude. Its origin is tied to the vision of Mr. Antonio María Cortés Robles, an agricultural pioneer and Boyacá native, whose dream began in the 1950s.
During our orchard visit, we will explore the Olivo Museum, which showcases the history of olive cultivation in Colombia and its sustainability challenges. We'll also visit The Olive Tree Artisanal Products Shop and the Olive Tree Nursery of various productive varieties.
We will discover different methods and delectable preparations based on olives and oil, and sample a range of unique oils, from mild to robust, all crafted locally. You will learn to distinguish the diverse flavor profiles and characteristics of each olive oil, capturing the essence of local craftsmanship on your palate.
After exploring these two rural treasures, we'll return to Villa de Leyva with memories full of authenticity, flavors, and regional traditions, ready to continue exploring more of this enchanting Colombian destination.
